Vania Cao | Dental Hygiene Journey
A reflection on my learning, growth, and clinical development in dental hygiene
Hello, I'm Vania, a dental hygiene student dedicated to developing the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to promote oral health and client care.
This e-portfolio reflects my learning experiences, academic growth, and ongoing development throughout the program. It highlights my strengths and areas for improvement as I continue working towards becoming a confident and competent dental hygienist committed to serving my community.
A Passion for Dental Hygiene

About Me
My interest in dental hygiene began in high school, where I had the opportunity to complete a co-op placement in a dental office. Through this experience, I was able to shadow a dentist who encouraged me to be hands-on and actively involved in the clinical environment. This exposure inspired me to pursue dental hygiene, as I realized how much I enjoyed science, client care, and the opportunity to educate others while making a difference in my community.
Since starting this program, my understanding of the dental hygiene profession has grown significantly. I have learned to recognized how closely oral health is connected to overall systemic health, which has deepened my appreciation for the profession. Throughout my studies, I've been building my clinical knowledge while also developing an understanding of the importance of client-centered care. I value creating a comfortable and supportive environment where clients feel heard, respected, and genuinely cared for.
As I continue through the program, I am looking forward to building my skills, gaining more confidence in clinic, and continuing to grow academically and personally. I hope to contribute to a more positive healthcare experience by ensuring that clients feel valued, respected, and not rushed, while still receiving the quality care they deserve.

Semester I Reflection
Throughout my first semester, I was introduced to many new concepts that challenged me to think differently and apply what I learned in new ways. I began to understand how closely oral health is connected to overall health, which changed the way I would view client care and the role of a dental hygienist.
This semester has also helped me recognize the importance of adapting to the pace of the program while continuing to build confidence in my clinical skills. As I am still developing these skills, I am learning to trust myself more and become more comfortable in hands-on clinical settings.
One thing that stood out to me is how in-depth the dental hygiene profession truly is. Before entering the program, I did not fully understand the level of knowledge and responsibility involved. At the same time, I have learned to adapt to new challenges and I am excited to keep learning and developing my skills.
Overall, this semester has been a valuable learning experience that has helped me shaped my growth both academically and clinically.
PLO 1 | 7.3
PLO I | Health Promotion & Education
Use effective communication and educational tools to support client understanding of oral health.

Evidence
One piece of evidence that demonstrates this outcome is the children's and adult's oral health education book that I had created as part of a course assignment. The purpose of the assignment was to develop educational material that explains oral health concepts in simple, engaging, and age-appropriate way.
In this project, I focused on simplifying complex topics such as plaque, dental caries, and oral hygiene practices that would be appropriate for all ages to understand. I incorporated visuals to promote engagement as i provide education on oral health topics.
Reflection
This assignment demonstrated my ability to communicate oral health information in ways that is clear and appropriate for different audiences. This assignment required me to think about how I would take the information learned in class, and simplify it while still effectively educating clients.
Through this experience, I gained a better understanding of how important it is to adapt communication to meet the client's age, needs, and knowledge. I also realized that effective communication is more than providing information, but also ensuring it is engaging and understood.
One aspect I am proud of is my ability to break down complex concepts into simple explanations while still keeping the information accurate. I am currently continuing to refine my booklet by adding more information and ensuring all required topics are included, while also preparing it for future use in semester 3 clinc.

PLO II | Clinical Skills & Safe Practice
Applying safe and effective clinical skills in dental hygiene practice
Evidence
One piece of evidence that demonstrates this outcome in my performance is in instrumentation summative assessments that are completed throughout the semester. These evaluations assessed my ability to apply proper techniques, including adaptation, angulation, and fulcrum placements, all while maintaining safety and within the dental hygiene scope of practice.
Reflection
These assessments helped me identify specific areas in my instrumentations that need improvement. To work on this, I dedicate extra time each week to practice and refine my techniques. This has allowed me to gradually improve my control, adaptation, clock positions, and overall confidence in my clinical skills. Each assessment has helped me become more aware of areas that need improvement, while reinforcing the skills I am developing.

PLO III | Clinical Assessment & Integration of Care
Integrating assessment findings and clinical knowledge to support decision-making in dental hygiene care.
Evidence - DHPC Formative Outline
One piece of evidence that demonstrates this outcome is my introduction to comprehensive client assessments in clinic. While I am still developing this skill, i have recognized how different components of care come together, including EO/IO assessments, instrumentation, and accurate documentation of findings.
I have also been introduced and have been applying various assessments including health history, periodontal and gingival assessments, caries and periodontal risk, tobacco use, and developing a DH diagnosis. In addition, I am beginning to transition from paper-based documentation to digital documentation, which requires me to learn and adapt to new systems.
This experience is allowing me to begin learning how to integrate multiple skills and areas of knowledge in a clinical setting.
Final Reflection
Overall, this e-portfolio highlights my growth and development throughout the program so far. It reflects on areas where I have developed new skills and knowledge, as well as areas where I am continuing to improve in. Through these experiences, I have developed a better understanding of my role as a dental hygiene student and the importance of providing client-centered care. I am excited to continue building my confidence, strengthening my clincal skills, and growing both academically and professionally.
